This is a pre-order for the brand new Nexus 5! The device is expected to run the latest Android 4.4 KitKat which is said to be launched officially on October 28. From the eBay pre-order, we can see that it’s $349 for the 16GB model; many expect the 32GB model will be priced at $399.

The Nexus 5 should be able to hold its own against the competition thanks to the quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 CPU. Bolstered by 2GB of RAM, LTE support, and NFC capability, the handset is expected to employ wireless charging capability and a 2,300mAh battery. From leaked pictures of Nexus 5, we can also pretty much assume a hopefully-improved camera sensor with possible OIS technology.

However neither Google nor LG have officially announced the coming of the Nexus 5, let alone revealed the launch date. Careful buyers may want to wait for the official word before plunking down their cash. There’s also an interesting rumor that Google plans to introduce not only a Nexus 5 in the coming weeks, but also a new LTE-enabled Nexus 4.

It’s getting close to the Black Friday and holiday shopping season. It’s quite likely that Google wants to release the Nexus 5 within the next four weeks at the latest to make sure it’s available before Black Friday. So that Nexus 5 will not miss big sales in the shopping season. So I guess we’ll just have to wait for a few weeks before it finally arrives.

The Next Version of Android to Be Named Kit Kat

Android chief Sundar Pichai announced Tuesday via Twitter and Google Plus that the next version of Android (Android 4.4) will be named Kit Kat instead of the rumored Lime Pie. This has created a lot of buzz in the world. He also added that Android had hit 1 billion activations.

In the start, Google was going to use the long-rumored codename Key Lime Pie, but it seems that very few people know the taste of a key lime pie. As a result Google opted to change the name at the end of last year. Someone (presumably on the Android team) suggested KitKat as a name since the company keeps KitKats “in the kitchen for late-night coding” snacks.

Google has worked with chocolatey and crunchy candy bar maker Nestle and Hershey. In partnership with Google, Nestle will make a number of Kit Kat bars to promote Android. According to Google, more than 50 million specially branded chocolate bars will be sold in 19 markets across the world including the U.S, U.K, Canada and the Middle East. If you buy the bar, you will be able to enter to win Google prizes, including the Nexus 7 tablet. According to Nestle’s press release, they will also make a limited number of robot-shaped bars. Just like a real-life Willy Wonka.

Google has named all Android versions in alphabetical order after desserts, starting with Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and now Kit Kat. For the moment, Google has also erected a Kit Kat statue in the shape of the Android robot in front of its Android headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. to join the other Android statues.

I guess by working with Nestle, one of the world’s biggest food producers, Google gets massive exposure in convenience stores and supermarkets. While Android devices big to small will bear the Kit Kat moniker, resulting in a swath of brand recognition boosting for the candy maker.
